About

Towers Rare Books is a sole trader dealing in early modern books and manuscripts, with a particular concentration on the period c. 1500–1700.

The subjects I follow most closely are Roman and Ottoman history, Constantinople, and the philosophy, law and political thought of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I handle a small number of books each year, and catalogue every one of them individually.

Each book is described as accurately as I am able, and photographed in detail. I would rather describe a book too severely than too kindly. Where a book has faults they are set out plainly in the description and shown in the photographs, and the photographs form part of the description.

Currently offered: Merlin, Tomus secundus Conciliorum generalium — Paris: François Regnault, 1535.

Books are sold by enquiry and collected in person. There is no basket and no checkout: at these prices the right way to buy a book is to write first, ask whatever you need to ask, and see it in the hand before any money changes hands.

Enquiries of any level of detail are welcome, and I am glad to supply additional photographs of specific leaves before you commit to buying. If a term in a description is unfamiliar, the page on understanding our descriptions sets out what the cataloguing conventions mean.
